Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free kick took Manchester United to the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of Liverpool after a thrilling tie at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The two sides’ league meeting a week ago disappointed many but this encounter was full of goals and the Premier League champions have now won just one of their seven games in all competitions since Christmas.

United made five changes from the team that came from behind to beat Fulham in midweek, with Dean Henderson, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek and Marcus Rashford lining up, and David de Gea, Eric Bailly, Fred, Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes dropping out.

Mo Salah opened the scoring in the first half but Mason Greenwood ensured there was nothing between the two sides at the break as he converted coolly from Marcus Rashford’s pick-out.

Greenwood turned provider and Rashford turned scorer after the break, putting United in front before Salah equalised. United called for Bruno Fernandes off the bench and the Portuguese scored a sumptuous free-kick to book a fifth-round meeting with West Ham.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quizzed by BBC Sport after the victory:

“We really played some good stuff in periods, good goals we scored, we know we have to defend well against them of course.

“And I thought we managed to react well. Towards the end there’s always some moments there but I thought we kept them away.

“Great goal, a good free-kick. The thing is when you leave him [Fernandes] out like I did today, I think he stayed for 45 minutes after training yesterday shooting free-kicks. So I was quite confident he was going to hit the target! He got some time to practice.”
